“I went to New York to look for acting jobs. Modeling was all in between things, just to pay the rent. But I was too independent. I was already determined to look the way I wanted to look. If you’re with one of the big agencies in New York you can’t even cut your hair without permission. It’s so fickle and so killing for the ego. It was hard for me in New York so I didn’t stay. I never bang my head against a wall that isn’t giving way. I shaved my eyebrows, shaved my head and said ‘Ok. I’m out of here.’ I was very frivolous then. You could turn me this way and that. I was a go-go dancer, too. I called myself Grace Mendoza to fool my parents.”
